It was a cold, rainy night, but that didn’t stop the Benicia High girl’s varsity soccer team from defeating their bitter rivals in the Solano County Athletic Conference league opener. The Panthers beat the American Canyon Wolves by a score of 3-1, en route to a 1-0 start in league play.
Benicia came out strong, as Sienna Berdan (9) scored the opening goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. Maxine Wade (11) assisted the goal. Later in the 1st half, Antonia Diaz (10) added to the Panther’s lead with a breakaway goal to make the score 2-0.
American Canyon, however, did not back down. The Wolves kept themselves in the game with a goal inside the penalty area before halftime.
The 2nd half of the game was controlled by the Panthers. Carly Castellano (12) assisted Berdan for her second goal of the game, which sealed the victory for the Panthers. Berdan also had another shot that went into the goal post, but it was called back for an offsides penalty. The Wolves had a few shot attempts, but either goalie Madison Goodmiller (11) saved the shots or the Benicia defenders got to the ball first.
Several Panthers were excited about the victory. “We had the mindset to win the game and it was nice to see us beat them,” explained Katie Lovelace (12). Alyssa Lisenko (12) said “It feels amazing to beat American Canyon.”
The soccer team hopes to continue their success into their next game against Vintage on Friday, March 11.
